On 2 different standalone DVD recorders, I occaisionally get a record
failure. The screen message from the recorder basically says there is
some problem with the disc, but it does not say more about what that
probablem might be. One of the recorders suggests cleaning the disk.
I examine the disks to see if they might be dirty or scratched after
this happens, generally looking close at the outer edge of where the
recording stopped. I generally see no dirt or scratches. But what I
do see in almost all of these cases (and never on a good recording) is
some kind of flaring pattern of lighter/darker areas right at the edge
where recording stopped, usually with 2 to 4 distinct flares alternating
between light (like the unrecorded area) and dark (like the recorded
area). The flares are roughly triangle shape, about 1mm on a side.
Could this be the laser going out of focus during the record?
Could this be the laser missing the groove track during record?
I am using DVD+R media, usually Verbatim brand, but sometimes Sony or
some other brands. It has happened with Verbatim and Sony. Other
brands have not been used enough for a good sampling. This happens in
about 1 in a 100 recordings. It's not an issue of cost of wasted media
but rather, an issue of lost recording opportunity (delaying TV programs
for later viewing). Would DVD-R media be worth trying?
The recorders are RCA brand and Panasonic brand.
Maybe I should get a combination HD/DVD recorder than can keep recording
to the HD and let me change the DVD and retry the recording again on a
new one. I want to be able to record up to 4 hours.
