My Digital 8 Handycam has provisions for both USB and FireWire. Sony calls
 it i.Link.

I'm sorta in the same boat you are. I do not have a firewire card or cable
yet. I's on my xmas list from wifey :)

I would send data to my computer using Windows Movie maker. This got it on
my HD and I was able to edit it and such. I then user Nero to convert it
to MPEG2. (had to buy the MPEG codec from Nero, since I was using the OEM
 version)

The finished product was far from perfect. I think I *have* to use the
Firewire port and the Sony software. I assume the version of the software
for use w/firewire is a little better than that ganky crap I have with usb.
(I eveidently have the same software you have. It likes to stop after 20
 minutes)
