Thanks a bunch to all of you. I ask a reasonable question from a position
of ignorance and get abuse for my efforts. I will buy a firewire cable and
give it a crack. If I have as much success as I have had with USB (which
works fine on my laptop, by the way), you will all not be the first people I
ask for help. Do have a wonderful time being superior and obnoxious to
beginners who don't have the cash to rush out and buy an extra $40 of gear
at the drop of a hat. I look forward to helping any or all of you when you
need help in my areas of expertise.
