Not yet. I'll try this next.

Just checked the most recently-burned disc with DVD Shrink - no problems
 detected.

 The manufacturer is Hi-Val.

Like I said, the first 80 or so discs worked just fine. What happened at
disc 81? Why does it work on the PC but not in a standard DVD player?

The discs and the drive are both advertised at 8x, and I'm burning at 8x. I
 can try a slower speed.

Can a bad disc work fine in the PC but not in a standard DVD player? Why
the problem in the middle (actually about 80 discs in) of a 100 disc pack?
Maybe it is the lens, but why would the disc then work in the PC?
