Well, also consider this:

"Sony has more than 140 patents related to MPEG-2."

And as far as I know, no important ones on any of the new formats.

There's several features that are technically part of the DVD "standard"
that aren't used. Some don't even work on many brand name players. I
suspect promiseing support for M$ codecs that are under constant revision is
along those lines.
