Absolutely, that is what I often do, even the digital TV receiver is a PCI card.
But my DVD player output has a higher quality then the TV out of the
graphics card.
Also I need the standalone players to test DVDs I produce.
In Linux there is nothing that beats 'mplayer' and 'xine', these play every
format, even DVB-s (satellite) transport stream.

There is an important issue of backups too, the optical disks are my backups!
make very sure you will not lose everythiong if a harddisk crashes.
And if you backup to a second hard disk, make sure it is actually a second
disk, not an other partition on the same one, it seems a silly mistake,
but is worth checking.

I have picasa, works OK, but almost never use MS windows....
Only thing now is my Canon scanner, it is not supported in Linux.
And some Epson DVD layout program.
