The Philips DVP 642 has a very harsh picture. But some people overlook that
to get its ability to play just about anything on digital discs.
The Sanyo DWM 450 has a nice picture. But the error correction is very poor.
I went through two of them and both were the same. Too bad, because it has
the foul language filter feature that some parents find useful.
I expected the Sony DVP NS 50P to have a great picture with its 12 bit video
dac, but no. It's very slow to load up the disc, then it gives you a very
soft picture.
After going through all of the above and more from other stores, I was about
to give up. But somebody on a dvd forum mentioned the Magnavox MWD 200F had
a decent picture.
Wish I could remember who it was, so I could thank them. It turned out to be
a decent, watchable machine for about $34 at Wally World. And the error
correction is super! It plays a Futurama disc with factory defects that made
a Pioneer 285 choke up and finally quit.
The Magnavox is great except for two things. No physical display on the
actual machine. But you can punch it up on your tv with the handy little
remote. The second not-so-great is no progressive scan.
But it does have S-video out and the picture is nice and sharp. And the
audio isn't bad either, come to think of it.
Good luck,
