Today, DVD Verdict posted reviews of CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS, CITY OF THE
DEAD, GEORGE LOPEZ: WHY YOU CRYING?, HALLELUJAH, LADIES IN LAVENDER, LA
SCORTA, THE LUCIANO ERCOLI DEATH BOX SET, METROPOLITAN: CRITERION
COLLECTION, NBA STREET SERIES: VOLUME 3, OCTOBER MOON, SAW II, and
THUNDERCATS: SEASON ONE, VOLUME TWO:

CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS (reviewed by Joe Armenio, overall score 83/100):
"As I watched Captains Courageous, I found myself imagining an alternate
version directed by a master like John Ford, one in which Manuel's songs
are loving, extended set-pieces and life on the fishing boat is shown
through a series of languorous anecdotes."

CITY OF THE DEAD (reviewed by Steve Evans, overall score 83/100):
"While not in the same league as the gorgeous color productions by
Hammer Studios, this tight little black-and-white film zips along like a
spook on speed to a terrific, fiery climax."

GEORGE LOPEZ: WHY YOU CRYING? (reviewed by Aaron Bossig, overall
score 88/100):
"Merely recalling memories isn't good comedy: the audience might get
giddy at some pleasant thoughts, but they won't really laugh without
real jokes."

HALLELUJAH (reviewed by Jesse Ataide, overall score 83/100):
"The cast of Hallelujah is made up entirely of actors with little or no
acting experience, and on that count alone, Hallelujah is a rather
remarkable film. Though it certainly has moments of awkward and clumsy
acting, the main cast is overall able to convey a real human presence,
which is certainly one of the film's greatest strengths. "

LADIES IN LAVENDER (reviewed by Jennifer Malkowski, overall score
75/100):
"At its core, Ladies in Lavender is a subtle story about fairly minor
events that take on major significances in the hearts of two elderly
women. It's about how loud any sounds can seem in quiet lives and also
about how joyous they can be. Unfortunately, director Charles Dance
often loses his grip on this effective tone, allowing the film to wander
into moments of pretension."

LA SCORTA (reviewed by Brett Cullum, overall score 86/100):
"La Scorta is an intense portrait of machismo; square-jawed men setting
out to do what's right under impossible odds. Fans of films like The
Godfather or The Untouchables will appreciate it the most, but will find
the film ultimately a little too watered down and small in scope to
match up to those high octane thrillers."

THE LUCIANO ERCOLI DEATH BOX SET (reviewed by Paul Corupe, overall
score 89/100):
"Though producer-turned-director Luciano Ercoli only directed a fistful
of gialli -- the two presented here, plus 1970's Forbidden Photos of a
Lady Above Suspicion (due out soon from Blue Underground) -- it's
undeniable that he brought his own special twist to the Italian
thriller."

METROPOLITAN: CRITERION COLLECTION (reviewed by Mac McEntire, overall
score 89/100):
"Watching Metropolitan, it hit me that although we often read words such
as 'therefore,' 'nevertheless,' or 'whereby,' we rarely hear them
spoken. And yet, that's how these characters talk. Even when they're at
their most informal, the actors all still deliver their lines in a
proper and stately way."

NBA STREET SERIES: VOLUME 3 (reviewed by David Johnson, overall
score 90/100):
"So, you in the mood to watch gigantic gajillionaires forcefully insert
basketballs into rims? Of course you are!"

OCTOBER MOON (reviewed by David Johnson, overall score 81/100):
"After a while, October Moon felt like The Real World: October Moon."

SAW II (reviewed by Bill Gibron, overall score 84/100):
"If there is one unanswered question left in the entire Saw series, one
that hopefully will be countered somewhere along the line, it is, 'Why
does Jigsaw do what he does?' As good as Tobin Bell is in the role, he
really never gets the kind of psychopath soliloquy we've come to expect
from our slayers. Indeed, now that we've sat through two of his maniacal
master plans, you'd figure he'd let us in on his overall scheme."

THUNDERCATS: SEASON ONE, VOLUME TWO (reviewed by Patrick Naugle, overall
score 85/100):
"I GOT ONE WORD FOR YOU -- CHEETARA"
