Have you read page 106 in the Pioneer manual? You'll have to leave
the 633 powered on for that to work. The IR controller will not be
able to turn it on or off. The 633 will only accept REC and STOP
commands from it.

My cable box has a guide like you describe, but it does not have an IR
controller for an external recorder, so I have to program both the box
and the 633 (I could use the 633's G-Link controller to change
channels on the box, but I didn't want to lose the option of using the
633's own tuner for basic cable channels) . Once you get used to
using the TIMER REC function on the 633, you should find that it is
extremely quick and easy to use. I can set a timer on the 633 faster
than I could with any VCR I have ever owned.
