Media Compatibility - DVD-R vs. DVD+R

Posted by sed on 02/27/06 00:43

For months I have been trying to find the right combination that lets me
burn DVDs and finalize for distribution. I make DVDs from my video camera
and distribute them to my associates. Unfortunately, often they cannot read
them, in fact, after burning them on my Sony DRX-710UL they had frequent
skips on my Onkyo DV-CP702.

Finally I read an article on CDFreaks about the technical differences
between the two formats and it made some sense. I had tried burning at the
slowest speed possible and even used 2X DVD-R disks. After reading the
article the fact that DVD+R has a better technique for burning with single
laser lens I took a disk that had frequent skips and recoded it and burned
it to a DVD+R.

The result no skips.

The tried another burn using output from a shoot burned onto a DVD-R,
recoded as a backup using Nero, then recoded to a DVD+R. Same results,
capable of being read with skips.

Conclusion, for single lens DVD burners capable of burning either DVD-R or
DVD+R, the +R format is superior for compatibility purposes.
