I think it must depend on the particular device(s).
For a long time I have been using a "Hauppage WinTV USB2" capture device
and I usually capture to external a USB2 160gb drive. I haven't had any
problems with this arrangement. The Hauppage has a built-in hardware Mpeg
encoder and I am sure that helps with my setup.
I also often watch TV in a window and sometimes I use the "pause live
TV" feature while I am using my computer along with 3 external USB2 hard
drives in a normal manner while my internet activity is using a
RoadRunner cable connection through a USB2 WiFi connection.
So far I have had no problems ... knock on wood.
