Clearly you need a video board that will handle whatever
resolution you want to use. I've never done a specific
investigation, but it appears that the more recent boards I've
seen will all handle the W*** (wide) varieties of monitors.
It likely takes only an updated driver for most of them
since the settings on the video chip are "soft loaded".
That is how it handles different resolutions, even in the
"normal" 4x3 monitors.
