SMPTE timecode can be added to a song in the recording studio for use in
shooting video later. For instance, back in 1983 I did some recordings at
the Record Plant in L.A. Our plan was to shoot a video for play on music
video telecasts. Having SMPTE timecode on the sound recording before doing
the shoot allowed us to do multiple takes from differing camera angles and
doing various thing like dancing around to the music, clowning around with
other band members to the beat of the music, etc.

Each time the recording was played back through the system the timecode
remained the same from take to take. The video producers made notes of
certain scenes they wanted to use with timecode markers. With all the
various takes being sync'd with the timecode there was no frame searching.
The engineer typed in specific timecode segments and the reel where it was.
With all the various reels of video running at once they could seamlessly
cut from one to the other to create the first assembly tape. Then from there
cut-aways or other sweetening of the edit for master could be made.

Let's say you are doing a professional shoot with 3 camera's. SMPTE is being
recorded with each camera and with the master audio track in a live shoot.
With SMPTE the shot on each camera, all three getting a shot of the singer
from a different angle (like on American Idol), the shot at 1 minute 31
seconds and 4 frames should match without fail. With shows like American
Idol there are several reels of video running simultaneously in post
production. This allows cutting from shot to shot without searching for the
sync frames.

In NLE it is quite different, unless you have some form of multicam in the
interface. But with multicam you should be able to sync faster with the same
timecode on each shot.
