get or make yourself (from a kit) a little belt-unit pre-amp, something that will run off a 9V battery. This could boost the signal
from your mike and imrove things. I made one several years ago for an electric guitar when I needed to boost its signal. Perhaps
one of the gadgets here would do the job:
