I suppose the idea is not resonance in the tube, but varying delays. The
delays only come out equally if the shotgun is pointed the right way.
In that way it would be equivalent to a tube with holes over the length.
As for multiple microphones for each delay: I'd guess it would be worse.
Each mic adds its own noise. It doesn't add linearly while the sound
will (modulo differences in the mics), but it is still more than the
noise of a single mic.
Hmm... not such a bad idea to experiment. Piece of PVC tube, mic in the
end, holes all over the length and see what it does.
