Any time you use A/V cables, you are transferring ANALOG signals.
I really wouldn't run the VCR in front of the DVR like that. When your
VCR goes into VCR mode it blocks the RF signal going to the DVR. That is
needed to keep the guide information and other stuff up to date. It will
also prevent it from talking back, which is used for OnDemand, some
forms of authorization, and other two-way needs. You are better off
using a splitter before the VCR, with one output going to the VCR, then
the TV.
You should also be using the A/V outputs of the DVR to the TV if
possible for the best picture.
Basically, VHS is a low-quality output no matter what. It's also
possible it's A/V output is weak or something. Some VCR's have various
enhanement circuits that may cause issues with your CameraMate. Some
VCR's have settings to adjust sharpness or set some form of copy mode
that disables these.
