It sort of works.
Basically, the way I think about it, the shotgun is the mike of last resort.
When you can't boom with a hypercardioid and you can't use lav mikes, and
there is no other solution for an outdoor shot with a lot of diffuse noise,
you pull out the shotgun.
So when you're stuck in that kind of situation, you want a shotgun that is
really good at pulling junk out of the muck. And frankly, a used 416 will
do a lot better job at that than booming with the A-T above, for about the
same price. The 416 isn't even remotely natural on-axis and it just sounds
godawful even a little off-axis (like any shotgun), but it does the job
when nothing else will.
