Problem with Horizontal Light Smears - Sony TRV38

Posted by supernerd23 on 04/01/06 16:36

I'm hoping someone can provide some insight into what may have gone
wrong with my Sony TRV38 miniDV camcorder. Last night I was out
recording some bands in a local club. The first set I recorded looked
great. When I turned the camera on to start recording the second band,
I found that the picture I was seeing in the LCD screen or the
viewfinder had horizontal light streaks that I could not get rid of no
matter what I tried. The streaks went to the right and originated both
with any actual light source or with any object that was lighter in
color (like band member's white t-shirt would have a massive white
horizontal streaks to the right).

I reviewed every setting on the camera - played around with the
exposure (which was on Auto setting) and the White Balance presets and
could not get a good picture. If I put the camera on the Night Vision
setting then the streaks just got worse. I could play with the
exposure settings and get the streaks to go away - the only problem is
at that point (the lowest setting) the whole picture has also gone
away!

Today in looking at the camera again and just trying to shoot video
around the house/yard I'm finding that the streaks are still there and
persist no matter whether I'm indoors/outdoors or with much light or
little light.

In the three years I've been using this camera I've run into the
vertical light streak problem before when working in dark clubs with
one or two badly placed light sources. A lot of times I'm able to get
around that by re-positioning my camera or adjusting the angle of my
shot. But this problem seems to be some more general breakdown in the
optics of the camera itself because everything I look at is projecting
that horizontal smear to the right.

Can anyone provide any thoughts or opinions as to what is going on with
my camera?

Is it just time - finally - to be thinking about a new one?

Thanks in advance for the assistance.
