Which is one of the reasons VHS won over Beta. RCA VHS vcrs were
cheaper that Sony Betamax vcrs and RCA jumped the Shark by
bastardizing the VHS format with the 4hr lp mode. JVC soon followed
with a 6hr mode leaving Sony in the dust. Remember when VHS first
came out, Blank tapes were like $20 each in 1980 dollars when
inflation was 14% and VCRs cost close to $1k . So You would get more
bang for your buck with an RCA 4hr vcr vs a 1hr Sony Beta.
