dude, we're talking about an "industry" taking loses in the short run, 
not just "sony". because they are acting as an industry, such losses 
are acceptable so long as the long-term benefits are much larger.

Check your ideas, the mobile companies are raking in dough like crazy 
because they expanded their lineups to include medium-tech and 
high-tech devices running apps, both of which cost much more than basic 
phones. 
 
By creating a new market for quality devices in the home entertainment 
industry that can do much more than just play tapes, the blu-ray 
industry is betting just like the cellphone industry that everyone will 
benefit in the end. 
 
And of course, the carriers are in heaven.
