several reasons... the NTSC encoding of color information is low res, so
even moving to a separate luminance / color phase modulation (S-Video) still
looses most of the color information.
To retain 100% of the picture information contained in the MPEG-2 digital
encoding, you need component.
To improve the image quality frame-to-frame, you need to undo the pull-down
coding and recode in progressive, preferably with inter-frame
interpolation - Faroudja style.
Thus the need for progressive output.
