yeah, you're right. but most people probably just looked at the numbers
of hours a tape could hold and went with that.
funny thing is i think beta was more popular in some other countries,
but since US had a large market relative to other countries at the
time, the fact that US consumers rejected beta spelled the end of that
format. today, there are some very large markets around the world, so
two competing formats could probably exist side by side in different
places around the world.
i read about the Chinese DVD format...their market is so huge (they're
the biggest consumer market in the world already in many areas) they
could probably support a single format all by themselves.
