AVI is a "wrapper" for a number of different MPEG4 video encodings. DiVX
is licensed and proprietary while XVID is open-source and free. Support
for these in standalone players will vary according to what issues are
most important: cost (better to support XVID which is free) or
compatiblity (XVID support not guaranteed as it is changeable).

Doubtful. The LVW-5005 is an aging model which has already been superceded
by newer hardware. To add that feature to older hardware is usually not
 worth the effort.

There is no such animal. There are playback issues with all of them,
especially since, unlike a PC, new or bugfixed codecs cannot simply be
downloaded and installed when there is a problem. Even DiVX-certified
players have compatiblity requirements with regard to encoding. The
inexpensive standalone with the widest support for different formats is
 the $60 Philips DVP-642.

 The Ilo DVR5005MU1/Cyberhome DVDR1600MU1/TruTech TT1620MU1 recorders (all
manufactured by the Cyberhome factory in China) will play XViD and MPEG
files. This is an un-advertised capability, and they are rumored to be
removing DiVX playback in existing models due to licensing issues, and
the fact that they have introduced a real DiVX model in Europe, the
 DVDR1600D.
