Re: TDK at work on 200GB Blu-ray Disc

I have no proof of anything. But, what I know is that Blu-ray technology
simply isn't that far off from HD-DVD technology. Some licensing may add 20
bucks to the cost to build the players. But, processors, chip sets, lasers,
etc. are all coming from the same manufacturers. The actual hardware costs
should be very similar from all parties involved.

The only reason, I can believe that makes sense - which I freely admit could
be TOTALLY wrong, is that Blu-ray is specifically avoiding going after the
nickle and dime crowd to set themselves apart as simply being a superior
product.

What is the point of selling out all your units to Joe P? He won't be
featured in the next Home Theater Magazine, or issue of A/V Interiors. But,
the guy with the $100K theater... he may make those pages. Just in time
for Christmas and ... LOOK! There's PS3 w/Blu-ray and it's cost
competitive to HD-DVD.

No - entirely my opinion and I want to make darn sure that people understand
that I'm fully aware that things may not at all go the way I have described
them above. Lots of variables and many things must happen for this to be
accurate.

But, I believe that what I say makes sense from a marketing strategy point
of view. It is marketing 101 stuff - "Who is your target audience?" "Can
you supply your target audience with enough product?" - "Does it make
financial sense?"

If both Blu-ray and HD-DVD are selling out of their respective hardware
products - then Blu-ray is likely in a much 'finer' class of home than
HD-DVD will be. I believe that matters in the short term. Once PS3 comes
out, then Blu-ray will be EVERYWHERE. I believe that matters a lot in the
long term. I also consider it an excellent strategy.

But - that's just me right?

-you have proof of this? i was thinking they are more expensive because
-the components are more expensive. interesting hypothesis anyways.
