One of the pleasant surprises is how good is the mastering by
Apollo of this movie . Another superb one is of Bluffmaster still
playing in theaters .
Another bit of memorable dialog is where the villain says
'You may not give me your heart , but I will take your body!'
Everyone has their favourite Bollywood movie , and this one is
mine. Made around 1970 with Priya Rajvansh and Raj Kumar it has all
the ingredients that make it stick in the mind for a long time.
It is one movie that everyone must see . The English subtitling is
pretty accurate.
The dialogue in rhyme by Kaifi Azmi , the only Bollywood
movie is so fantastic that I have known people who have made tapes of
it .
The songs are immortal Meri Duniya meh tum ayi must be the
most romantic song ever written . Milo na tum to hum gabrayen - When I
dont see you I get worried , when I meet you I am afraid to meet your
eyes , sings the girl , as happens in real life
Yeh duniya meri kaam ki nahin - this world is of no use to me
, he sings when he loses her.
'Even god does not have a jewel in his treasure box as
beautiful as you ' will melt any girl's heart.
Do dil toote , do dil hare - two hearts have broken , two
hearts have been defeated - at the separation and many more.
Pran is absolutely brilliant in his role as the bitter lame
man who is determined to destroy the girl's happiness.
The colors are deep and rich . The backround music is
fantastic eg when the girls are playing hide and seek in the forest.
Two outstanding scenes are when the girl is asking the father to grant
her wish (to marry the man of her choice) and when she is arguing with
the priest who wont accept the fact that she doesnt want to marry the
man her parents want her to- everyone I have ever known has cried at
that scene.

Azmi wrote songs like Yeh duniya yeh mehfil for Heer Ranjha, an
experimental film done entirely in verse. (Vikram Seth attempted
something similar in the novel form, writing an entire book in
sonnets).

Vijay Anand's under-production Jaana Na Dil Se Door has songs by Azmi.
Some Kaifi Azmi gems:

Waqt ne kiya kya hasin sitam (Kaagaz ke Phool)
Chalte chalte yun hi koi mil gaya tha (Pakeezah)
Kar chale hum fida jaan-o-tan saathiyo (Haqeeqat)
Ye duniya ye mehfil (Heer Ranjha)
Tum itna jo muskura rahi ho (Arth)
Dhire dhire machal aye dile beqarar (Anupama)
