Why would it make any difference what ratio your dvd's were?. Overscan is
the same whether watching 16:9 or 4:3, you don't miss any more or less.
From my experience (and I do actually make videos for a living) overscan is
such a slight issue that it's not really worth losing a seconds sleep over.
Are you sure you're not confusing this with the carious aspect display
options of your set? Is your TV 4:3 or 16:9 anyway, not sure if that was
ever established.
