While I have NO idea what "4 pi steradians" means, I am well
aware that 5.1 (NOT sure about 7.1) is AUDIBLY different (not
superior, just different) from stereo let alone mono. IMO, some
stuff sounds better in mono no matter what it is.

The two "main stereo" (I must have 4 stereos and 3 or 4
blasters) speakers I have (ProAc Tablette II's) are the most
valuable thing in my house.

I used to have a subwoofer hooked up to them but they sound
better without it. The big black rectangular subwoofer makes a
lovely coffee table though.

As for "surround", I don't particularly care for it. I used to
go to film school in LA and a lot of the teachers took
particular care to point out how incredibly important sound is.
It is admittedly more complicated than the image part, and can
add/modify the emotional/etc impact very considerably, but it is
still just sound. (As opposed to the kind of music you listen to
on your stereo, which is MUCH more than just sound).

I hold all those teachers (and I'm sure the same words rang
throughout all the 1,000 or so film school there were in the US
at the time) partially responsible for all the 5.1 etc crap we
are now subject to. Besides the usual "money is everything"
problem, of course.

(And I BET there WILL be 10.3 or something like it.)

Italians made the best films in the world and for DECADES they
never even recorded live sound, just dubbed it in later. Didn't
make the films *any* less brilliant.
