GY-DV500 vs DSR-PD170

How does the Sony DSR-PD170 compare to the JVC GY-DV500 in terms of
overall picture quality?

I have acquired a taste for video production related to some projects
I'm working on and it seems like it'll be much, much easier for me to
just own my own camcorder. I have heard great things about the JVC
GY-DV500 (which seems to compare well to the Sony DSR-300) and I have
also heard great things about the little Sony DSR-PD170.

I'm leaning towards the PD170 for it's compact size and appx. $3000
price for a brand new camcorder and accessories. The DV500 is also
tempting, it's larger and I'm better at holding large camcoders that I
am small camcorders, but the vast majority of my shots will be tripod
anyway.

DV500 has 1/2" CCDs and a nice big lens, but its CCDs are older than
the 1/3" CCDs in the PD170, a camcorder known for great low light color
and quality. PD170 would be a lot easier to port around, but I'm
partial to larger camcorders.

So, for me, it's coming down to picture quality. How does the DSR-170
compare to the GY-DV500 in terms of overall picture quality?
