Having worked with both I'd rather have the PD170. The DV500 may have
the potential to improve through fitting a better lens, the standard one
that comes with it is a 'pretend' lens and not as good as the really
quite decent Carl Zeiss fixed to the PD170. However because the DV500 is
3 x 1/2" CCD type, rather than the standard 2/3" type, the lens options
are not that great except by spending so much money it defeats the whole
premise. The PD170's 1/3" CCD's maybe smaller but they are more advanced
HAD types. In my own side by side tests the PD170 pictures were markedly
superior in terms of clean well defined and realistic images as
opposed to the somewhat unnatural and almost SVHS looking texture of the
DV500. Additionally the PD170 provides DVCAM. The BBC has over 1,000 of
them, now being slowly replaced with Z1's. The DV500 is favoured
poseurs, low budget corporate and wedding videographers who feel a need
to impress their incognicent clients with a camera that looks, to them,
like a broadcast type.
