I'm convinced that it's down to the exact configurations of hardware and
software and the slight differences between two apparently identical
systems. Reports from users are so contradictory it seems to be the only
reasonable explanation. We have pretty much switched over to PC's now
but still have a G5 with FCP 5, prior to that we had a top spec G4 which
also seemed to work well with FCP HD, albeit somewhat slower. Over the
last few years we've learned the hard way about systems and as far as PC
options go, not to buy any off the shelf configurations, no matter how
highly recommended, because all commercial sellers cheapskate on
processors, motherboards and any other component they can squeeze a buck
out of. Let alone their dubious expertise. Our last four PC systems were
all built in house by our own computer druid and the difference is
scandalously self evident. Our bespoke PC's run both Canopus Edius 3.6
and Premier Pro 1.5, about to upgrade to v2.0. Even at HD level these
PC's have proven utterly bomb proof, I can't remember when we last had a
crash or any glitch at all with them, so far 110% functionality. The
main thing with PC's is to build 'em like Rolls Royce's, spare nothing
on the components and make everything as powerful as possible, works a
treat for us. How do they compare with the G5? Put it this way, if I had
to make a choice today purely on the basis of reliable functionality and
user friendliness, it'd have to be the PC's

But tomorrow's another day
