And that's Apple's fault? Steve Jobs rang up the other music store
owners and begged them to encode their tracks so they wouldn't play on
an iPod?

So what's your problem? You want to buy at iTMS, get an iPod - simple.
Otherwise, feel free to buy one of the hundreds of other players and get
your music elsewhere.
