This is a common problem with cheapie, off brand DVD players that use lasers  
that are of insufficient wattage/brightness, and I have seen a few in which  
the laser is completely the wrong color. 
 
It has nothing to do with surface prints. 
 
Lesson learned:  You get what you pay for.
