I always thought so too and can't verify it personally as I don't own
a + drive, but it has been mentioned before. I found this on a sony
website. I guess what it really means is they don't need finalizing to
play in a compatible player?

If you are using a DVD-R, DVD+R, or DVD+R DL Double Layer disc, yes,
you must finalize before it will playback on a DVD player. DVD-RW or
DVD+RW media does not ever need to be finalized and will play
immediately after being ejected from DVDirect recorder."
