From what are you recording? If an external source such as a stereo, check
that you are using the correct line in/out jacks (not "microphone").
I have no idea what a "hard limit" is but I don't think it or the S/N ratio
would be caused by Audacity itself (or the other program)...more likely,
your setup Tweak the source volume vs input volume to minimize noise.
Maybe check the mixer settings, maybe try a different mixer channel (if
possible).
