Yes, that is the whole point, to give the camera a reference
for where "whtite" is while shooting.

Yes, you "can", but it would be silly. No, you will not get
a "good picture" unless you white balance the camera under
the SAME conditions you are shooting under.

Set the white balance under the conditions you will be
shooting. Nothing else makes any sense.
The three "memory" settings for white balance may be
useful for things like where a shot starts indoors (~3200K
color temp) and then you move outdoors (~5600K color
temp) and then into the garage (~4500K fluorescent), etc.
Just before the shot, you could go indoors and save the
color balance in the "A" memory, go outdoors and set
the "B" memory, and then into the garage and set the"C"
memory. Then as you move between indoors, outdoors,
and fluorescent, you switch to your preset color balance
settings.
Taking a color balance in the morning and trying to
use it in the afternoon makes no sense unless you are
at the tropics where it might not change that much
between morning and afternoon.
