I have 2 with buttons like you describe. Dunno if they're the same, but the
ones on mine are for loosening/tightening the waist. I haven't done it, but
it _looks_ like I could fatten up an inch or two and still wear
them -without breathing in all the time.
Of course if I put on that much I'd have to shoot myself before putting my
trousers on anyway. :(
