You "need" similar accessories whatever player solution you choose.

Not that hard to replace for the technically invlined, plus one can use
external battery packs.

For the simple act of putting MP3s on CDRs or a Flash player, yes.
But you have to get the MP3s somehow, and that means some sort of
ripper/encoder, or and online store (some requiring their own app), and
if DRM is involved, its player.
iTunes does all that in one program.

Unneccesary, maybe, in the sense it is a luxury item.
Unecessary to the marketplace, no, as Apple has advanced personal media
players from a geek device to a lifestyle (mostly in marketing mind
you), possibly creating a place for the cheaper players.
