Just get the 3.54 beta. There's a new patch for it, but I haven't
looked into whether I need it.

As for the beta client itself, installing shouldn't affect them. I
like to archive my files anyway, but a new install of the program
shouldn't be any danger. On reinstall, you will have to configure the
program to choose which folders contain your shared files.
