I'm not against upgrading. I've only had 2 main DVD players, my Panasonic
A360 which cost me 300 in 2000, then I bought a Pioneer 575 a year ago
which upgraded me to DVD-Audio and SACD compatability, not to mention
CD-R/RW, MP3, DIVX etc. The killer point here though is that the Pioneer
cost 100 - a third of the price of the Panasonic, for better audio and
video DACs and vastly increased format compatability.
Likewise I've upgraded my TV's as the technology has become cheaper, from a
4:3 set to a Hitachi non-flat widescreen to a Panasonic flat widescreen; and
upgraded my sound, from TV only to a 5.1 speaker set driven by internal
decoders on my DVD player to the Panasonic amp I currently use.
At the moment, just a decent HD display will set you back best part of a
grand (for the small ones), let alone the BR/HD player and new media to go
with it. I consider myself a home cinema enthusiast - I had a DVD player,
widescreen TV and 5.1 sound before anyone else I know, however I live on a
budget and none of my individual HC items has ever cost me more than 400.
HD won't be happening to me until the prices are more realistic and the
BluRay/HD-DVD choice is decided. Most people just don't have 1500 to spend
on a TV.

Totally agree. Maybe the same people who can afford 1500 TV's can afford to
replace their entire DVD collection. I can't. It's taken me over 5 years to
build up a collection of just over 200 DVD's, and whatever I upgrade to
_must_ be able to play my existing discs. I'm not spending another 5 years
collecting the same films again.
