The Blu-ray recorders available in Japan are a different format with the
same name. They use recordable discs held in a cartridge-style caddy and
are not compatible with the new Blu-ray playback format. Sony simply
recycled the name.

1) All video game consoles are sold at a loss. The company makes its
money back on software licensing.
2) All video game consoles are lousy movie playback devices. Ever tried
watching a DVD on a PS2? Expect horrible quality video from the PS3
(even worse than the standalone Blu-ray players).
