Ageing DVD - a basic home test!

Posted by Charlie+ on 07/02/06 20:30

Having read a bit about DVD disks and ageing -
I took a DVD+R (burned) and laid it inside a double glazed east facing window
in spring/summer, I masked a portion of the outer disk as a control.
I expected the disk to remain readable for some months at least - rather amazed
to find the disk unreadable in any player or recorder at the first try - six
weeks only. The disk had darkened visibly in the unmasked area, a look under
the microscope shows the dye clouds are still there in visible light - but
presumably the contrast has now reduced to the point of invisibility to the DVD
readers.
I need now to do another test with interim readings etc. - but it looks as
though DVD disks are far more vulnerable than I was hoping though I suppose it
is quite a severe test.... hot with IR+UV exposure...
