These are obviously newbie questions....

My DVD recorder (Sony RDR-VX530) can record DVD -R/-RW in either
"Video" or "VR" mode. What are the internal differences? Which is
more likely to be compatible with other and older DVD players?

I find the terminology confusing because even in the user's manual,
"Video" usually refers to video cassette; and for me, "VR" means
virtual reality ;-). In the context of DVDs, what does "VR" stand for,
distinct from "Video"?

According to the user's manual, DVD VR offers more editing features.
Therefore, I ass-u-me that: (1) VR is the more recent format; and (2)
Video is more likely to be compatible with other and older DVD players.
Right?

But I wonder: are both formats mutually backward compatible? That is,
can a DVD written in VR format be read by a DVD player that does not
support VR? And can a DVD written in Video format be read by a DVD
player that does not support DVD Video? Or is the latter a moot
question because "everyone" supports DVD Video?
