need help making sense of mp3 mess

Posted by brian.janko on 07/05/06 19:14

I recently got my first iPod. I have many songs purchased recently. I
also have many from the old free Napster days.

Some of them have restricted licenses, so I cannot move them onto my
iPod. Even songs I have paid for do not have licenses that allow me to
move them onto the iPod.

Trying to fix this, I only caused my computer to forget about some of
the licenses and so was restricted on MORE songs. (Fortunately I was
able to restore those to their usable state.)

Is there a resource online that would explain all this in easy terms.
I'd like to know when I'm buying something what restrictions I'm buying
into. I would prefer to buy songs that have no restrictions. And I
certainly don't want to buy something where the restrictions change at
some pre-set date, or by transferring to an iPod.

Your assistance in helping me make sense of this mess would be much
appreciated.

Brian

(If there are services out there that make this all easier, rather than
Napster or iTuines, I'd like to know about them. However, I need a
service with a VERY wide selection as a lot of what I download is very
old and often obscure, TV show, movie thems, novelty pieces, or pieces
that just aren't listened to much anymore.)
