For the money, a used TRV900 off Ebay might be your best bet.
Otherwise, the Panasonic GS400 or 500 seems like a fine camera. We have
a 400. It's okay, but for some weird reason I prefer to take our TRV900
most of the time. I think the picture might actually be a bit warmer.

And, our GS400 broke-- error message demanding a reset. I'm not the
only one to get it. It's in to Panasonic for warranty repair, but it's a
tiny concern. The TRV900 has been extremely reliable.

For really serious shooting, I use my VX2000, which, for the money, was
probably the finest camera in it's class and might well still be.
