We have the DSR-85, which for the purposes of this discussion is
identical to the DSR-80. We have a rack and patch bay with every
possible connection set up between all the different VCR's, computers,
monitors, trick boxes and mixers. I have to say that the component
output from the DSR-85 when connected to other component equipped
devices, and that includes computers, is excellent. Particularly where
mixed digital and analogue formats are being captured to the computer,
the results are lovely and degeneration issues are zero. Clearly
uncompressed, or 2 to 1 in the case of Digi Beta, SDI to SDI between
digital formats is better, but from Beta SP with its greater resolution
and colour latitude than any standard definition digital format,
component is better. Digitising 5 to 1 DV or DVCAM via firewire is no
better than from component to my eyes. It's also interesting to note how
well HDV transfers via component too. There seems to be some advantage
to digitising from this rather than firewire.
It's only when four or more generations are required that component
loses it's edge, but since we never use component for more than
digitising camera rushes to computer, it's not an issue for us.
