The quality of the media, and the recording device help also in how
accurate the back-up can be read. A wider head, tracks further apart, a
stronger magnetic layer on tape, the tape-speed, it all helps.
Compare it to the problems with burning music-CD's. People used to burn
audio-CD's in at x1 or x2 to avoid coasters. Means that burning slower
gives a more reliable result.
