Also I believe that you record data redundantly on different parts of the
tape so that it can be reconstructed in case of damage. Think of par files
to reconstruct rar files...

This, of course, takes up lots of room. But after all is said and done, you
want the best recording and reading possibilites the first time around so
that you don't have to rely on error correction any more than necessary.
