You do not understand Fair Use. You are not allowed to copy and distribute a
work in its entirety. You may use excerpts for purpose of commentary or satire
- that parody trailer for "The Shining" which uses snippets from the film with
voice-over that makes it seem to be a family sitcom is a good example of Fair
Use. Copying and distributing the entire film - even if not for profit - is
not. Folks are being prosecuted for this. The only reason you haven't been is
that it's widespread and somewhat difficult to trace.
The law as applied to VCR taping that you mention elsewhere only allows you to
make copies off the air or from purchased material _for your own use_. You are
breaking the law if you make copies to give to others, or copy rented material.
Period.
