There were many mainstream movies from that time which had deeply
racist characters: The French Connection, Mean Streets, Taxi Driver,
etc. They got away with it because they were (at least perceived as
being) honest about it. They weren't trying to push buttons with
people (remember the line in The Godfather about blacks being "animals
anyway, let them lose their souls" is uttered off screen) as much as
genuinely portray some real attitudes.

That level of honesty is almost impossible to achieve today.
Everything has immediate portent attached to it now, like it or not.
There's just no way to act unaware anymore. Yes, the climate has
changed. Movies got away with unabashed racism for 75 years. Now
it's become harder (but still not *that* hard). Is a little
enlightenment and progress really that awful?
