Ah, that reminds me of one of my more surreal experiences of the time.
I was on one ship that had an Indian crew and one day there was a bit
of a commotion going on on the aft deck. So I wondered over just in
time for three of the daft buggers to haul this very miffed seven foot
hammerhead shark up and over the railings and flop the sodding thing at
my feet on the deck.
Not surprisingly it didn't take too kindly to this and decided it was
going to bite it's way out of the situation. Everyone immediately legged
it leaving poor beasty to bite the railings, and anything else it could
reach. The crew then took it in turns to rush in, smack the thing about
the head with whatever came to hand, and then run away again. Eventually
they subdued it and proceeded to chop it up for the chef to add it to
their curry for the night.
Don't think I'll ever quite forget that. Closest I've ever come to
Jaws, and I have no real desire to ever come that close again. Not
least of all because I felt sorry for the thing, and I hate curry.
